BIOGRAPHY

By winning the Dimitris Mitropoulos Competition in Thessaloniki in 2024, this young and promising conductor from Russia set the stage for his global career. Before that, he had already drawn attention at Salzburg Festival within Nestle Young Conductors Award in 2018 where he conducted a concert with Camerata Salzburg.


Born in Moscow, he had his first conducting lessons at the age of 13. He continued his studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, which he graduated with outstanding results. He won the position of First Kapellmeister in Moscow Operetta Theatre in 2016 where he led such performances as “Die Fledermaus”, “Die Lustige Witwe”, “Ball im Savoy” among others. In 2019 Sergey was appointed as a conductor in Studio New Music – a world-known ensemble, specializing on avant-garde performances.

Sergey Akimov gave numerous premieres of contemporary compositions as well as first performance of Gershwin’s one-act opera “Blue Monday” and a chamber arrangement of Stravinsky’s “Le Sacre du Printemps” in Russia. He also created various arrangements, including versions of symphonic works for chamber orchestra such as “Petrushka” by Stravinsky, Shostakovich “Jazz suite No. 2” and others.

His mentors include Gennadiy Rozhdestvensky, Fabio Luisi, Johannes Schlaefli, Howard Griffiths, Vladimir Jurowsky, Simone Young.


The conductor resides with his family in Berlin.
